Meet the artist:

John Boyd Smith

“It takes courage and experience to venture into creating seemingly free-form shapes, though he is always in control of every bend and nuance of the metal.”

- Author Dona Meilach, writing about John Boyd Smith, in her 2001 book, Architectural Ironwork.

Stroll along the historic district of Savannah observing the ornate, elaborate gates and railings and you surely will see his work.  Watch an episode of This Old House, Modern Masters or Good Morning America and you very well could catch a glimpse of him.  Pick up a copy of Southern Living, Carolina Architecture and Design, or Interior Design magazine and read an article about him.

John Boyd Smith is an exceptional, picture-perfect example of ornamental blacksmith as an art form.  John’s metalwork, gates, furniture, sculptures and accessories are admired in esteemed private residences and upscale hotels and establishments throughout the South.

His remarkable designs are sought after and he has been commissioned by names like

Ted Turner, Loews Hotel in South Beach, and The Sanctuary resort on Kiawah Island.

John’s designs are inspired by the natural world around him.  His mother loved gardening and as she nurtured her plants and flowers, she also taught him, from a young age, how to look at nature.

His close observation to the details in nature shows up in all of his creations.  He strives to capture the essence of it.  He goes beyond designing simple scrolls, his concepts focus on elements of flora and fauna, devoting hours to include those accurate details. John only does commission work; he does not perform any production work, everything he designs and creates is one of a kind.

He is a visionary, and through three

decades of sculpting iron, he has developed his craft to a level of expertise that many aspire to reach.

His award-winning designs are recognized both nationally and internationally by artists, architects, and interior designers.  CF Home is proud to offer three, one of a kind, original pieces by this master metal artisan.  His work is featured with us because it is the quality of work the discerning Charleston Forge customer expects.  John was once quoted as saying about his ornate gates, “Gates set the tone, letting visitors know that whatever lies beyond must be pretty special”.

We feel that featuring John Boyd Smith is like the ornate gate setting the tone for CF Home, and we know you will find what lies beyond is pretty special.
